Learning Vision

Our Vision for Learning is grounded in the Science of Learning and underpinned by the MACS Vision for Instruction. We are dedicated to delivering a knowledge-rich, evidence-based teaching and learning program. We believe in fostering teaching excellence, where all educators are empowered to implement research-backed practices that enhance student outcomes.

Our Approach to Effective Teaching and Learning

At St John’s we are committed to delivering a structured and evidence-based teaching and learning program that fosters student success. Our approach follows a deliberate sequence to ensure comprehensive understanding and skill development:

  1. Explicit Instruction: Teachers clearly articulate the concepts and skills students are expected to learn.
  2. Modelling: Educators demonstrate the application of concepts, breaking down tasks into manageable steps. This modelling provides students with clear examples of expectations and processes.
  3. Guided Practice: Students engage in practice activities with teacher support, allowing for immediate feedback and correction.
  4. Independent Practice: Once students have grasped the concepts, they apply their knowledge independently. Teachers monitor progress and provide feedback to ensure continued development.
  5. Formative Assessment: Ongoing assessment through effective questioning enables teachers to gauge student understanding and adjust instruction accordingly. This dynamic process ensures that teaching is responsive to student needs.
  6. Regular Review: Consistent revisiting of material strengthens memory retention and understanding.

This structured approach is grounded in research and best practices, aiming to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in their academic journey and beyond.

The Flourishing Learners position statement, Vision for Instruction, is a key document underpinning the MACS 2030 strategic plan. Vision for Instruction has been crafted to communicate MACS’ preferred system-wide approach to achieving teaching and learning excellence. It is firmly grounded in the evidence of how students learn most effectively and efficiently, offering explicit guidance for MACS schools on instructional best practice.
