Throughout their time at St John’s, students participate in a variety of Pathways activities. These activities are designed to help students make informed decisions regarding future study and career opportunities.

VET Program

Students studying VET have the opportunity to study a wide variety of hands-on subjects ranging from Building and Construction to Fashion Design either onsite at St John’s or offsite at other local secondary schools or TAFES that are part of the South East Local Learning and Employment Network.

To support students in their choice of pathway, the cost of internal VET courses will be covered by the all-inclusive College Tuition Fee with a flat rate applied to all externally provided courses. Regardless of the certificate undertaken externally, the cost will be capped at $400 per year per course, representing a significant subsidy for students who wish to pursue these options. Please note that this is subject to change based on actual 2026 course costs and funding arrangements.

Year 10 Vocational Minor Program

Our Year 10 Vocational Minor program offers students a dynamic blend of academic and practical learning experiences. The curriculum includes:

  • Religious Education – Catholic Action Program
  • English
  • Foundation Mathematics
  • General Science
  • History

In addition to these core subjects, students engage in two Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses:

  • Certificate II in Community Services
  • Certificate II in Workplace Skills

These VET courses are delivered through the VET Delivered to Secondary Students (VDSS) program, providing students with nationally recognised qualifications and practical skills.

The program is designed to fast-track students into interactive and immersive learning environments that are hands-on and skills-based, while still adhering to the Victorian Curriculum requirements.

Students in this pathway enjoy collaborating with their peers, analysing and problem-solving, and creating initiatives that demonstrate their knowledge and capabilities through practical components.

The Vocational Major pathway is designed for students who thrive in hands-on learning environments and aspire to pursue trade or skill-based careers. This program integrates practical vocational education with the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), offering students a comprehensive and applied learning experience.

Program Structure:

  • Vocational Education and Training (VET): Students select a VET course aligned with their career interests, providing them with industry-specific skills and knowledge.
  • Work Placement: On non-school days, students engage in work placements, gaining real-world experience and enhancing their employability.
  • Core Subjects: The curriculum includes VCE VM Literacy, Numeracy, Personal Development Skills, and Work-Related Skills, ensuring a well-rounded education.

Year 12 Work Readiness Program:

In Term 4, Year 12 students participate in a Work Readiness Program. This program equips students with essential workplace skills, micro credentials and certifications, including:

  • Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA)
  • Food Safety
  • Barista Training
  • White Card (Construction Induction)
  • First Aid Certification

Program Outcomes:

Upon successful completion, students receive:

  • A nationally recognised VET certificate
  • The VCE Vocational Major certificate
  • Micro-credentials that enhance their employability and readiness for future career opportunities.

This pathway empowers students to transition seamlessly into apprenticeships, traineeships, further education, or directly into the workforce, equipped with both the practical skills and academic qualifications necessary for success.

University Associated Programs

At St John’s, we have multiple partnerships with different universities. These partnerships give our students the opportunity to participate in specialised programs, the eligibility for scholarships and the ability to undertake university subjects whilst still in Year 12. Some of these programs also come with a guaranteed tertiary entry once students have finished their VCE.
